Overview

Building a highly available EHR infrastructure for continuous care

The client is a U.S.-based multi-specialty outpatient provider group delivering primary and specialty care across multiple clinic locations, all dependent on continuous access to a shared EHR. As the organization expanded, EHR availability became increasingly critical because downtime prevented providers from accessing records, documenting encounters, placing orders, and completing front-desk workflows.

The client’s earlier hosting environment lacked the redundancy and failover capabilities required to maintain consistent availability. To address this, the client engaged A&I Solutions to architect and deploy its EHR on AWS using a high-availability design with redundant infrastructure, automated failover, and continuous monitoring.

Challenge & Solution

Eliminating infrastructure risks that disrupted clinical operations

The Challenge

  • EHR outages directly interrupted patient care and prevented access to critical clinical workflows.
  • The existing infrastructure contained single points of failure and lacked automated failover.
  • Limited infrastructure monitoring meant issues were often detected only after they affected users.

Our Solution

  • Deployed the EHR across multiple AWS Availability Zones with redundant infrastructure.
  • Implemented automated database, DNS, and container-level failover.
  • Added continuous monitoring and automated alerts to identify infrastructure issues proactively.
Solution Architecture

High-availability AWS architecture for continuous EHR access

A&I Solutions deployed the EHR using a redundant, multi-AZ AWS architecture. Amazon EKS provided container orchestration, Amazon RDS Multi-AZ supported database redundancy, Elastic Load Balancing distributed application traffic, and Amazon Route 53 provided DNS-level routing and failover.

The Solution

Custom EHR software engineered for high availability

A&I Solutions strengthened the client’s custom EHR software through a resilient cloud infrastructure designed to maintain access even when individual components experienced failures. The architecture combined multi-AZ deployment, automated recovery, database redundancy, load balancing, and continuous monitoring to support dependable clinical operations. Through this A&I Solutions EHR case study, the implementation demonstrates how EHR system development must account not only for clinical functionality but also for infrastructure resilience and availability.

1. High-availability AWS architecture

A&I Solutions redesigned the hosting environment to eliminate single points of failure across the EHR infrastructure.

The platform included:

  • Multi-Availability Zone deployment across AWS
  • Amazon EKS for container orchestration
  • Amazon RDS Multi-AZ database redundancy
  • Elastic Load Balancing across redundant instances
  • Amazon Route 53 for DNS-level routing

By distributing application and database components across multiple Availability Zones, the architecture could withstand individual infrastructure failures without disrupting EHR access.

2. Automated recovery and continuous monitoring

The solution connected automated failover with proactive infrastructure monitoring.

Automated Failover

Amazon RDS Multi-AZ provided database failover, while Amazon Route 53 redirected traffic when required. EKS supported self-healing container workloads and automated recovery of failed components.

Infrastructure Monitoring

Amazon CloudWatch continuously monitored infrastructure health and application performance across the environment.

Proactive Alerting

Automated alerts were configured around health and performance thresholds, allowing the technical team to identify emerging issues before they escalated into outages.

Security & Compliance

OAuth 2.0, Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Single Sign-On (SSO), encrypted data storage and transmission, and HIPAA-compliant audit logging protected clinical information across the AWS environment.
